West Oakland Prescott Neighborhood

West Oakland is a vibrant neighborhood filled with creative industries, a growing culinary scene, and new housing developments. As community members, we have the chance to shape the area's future in a positive way. One example of this is the West Oakland Farmers Market, which creates a sense of community and promotes accessibility to fresh produce. While the neighborhood is changing, it is still considered a food desert and addressing food accessibility for all residents is crucial.

Prescott Market Hall Coming

Proposed Prescott Market on 18th Street & Peralta St

West Oakland has a rich history of innovation & soul and Prescott West Oakland will bring a little of that back to the neighborhood with the amazing new Prescott Market.

Working with existing buildings around the intersections of 18th/ Peralta / Campbell Sts, Ernst Development plans to restore, repurpose and bring back to their original glory, seven to nine buildings, with the centerpiece being a wonderful gathering space for great food, drinks and entertainment enclosed by beautiful outdoor seating areas, patios and parklets.

There are plans for a new cafe, taproom and eateries to join the West Oakland Farmers Market, as well as local favorites like Kowbird and Horn BBQ from award-winning chef, Matt Horn, Soba Ichi, 7th West, GhostTown Brewing, Magnolia Mini Mart and Kilovolt.

Surrounding Prescott Market will be various uses encompassing life science, food tech, manufacturing, logistics and research & development operations, all bringing new people to the area in addition to the many residents and small businesses that have called West Oakland home for decades.

Access to Healthy Foods

A lack of full-service grocery stores has classified West Oakland as a food desert.

West Oakland is a food desert. Our number one goal is to address the lack of accessibility to fresh healthy foods in the neighborhood, especially for the lower-income population. We always accept CalFresh EBT. In addition, when you spend $15 of your CalFresh EBT benefits, you will receive an extra $15 to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables at the market with Market Match.

Market Match is California’s healthy food incentive program, which matches customers’ federal nutrition assistance benefits, like CalFresh (formerly known as food stamps), at farmers’ markets. When customers use their benefits at farmers’ markets, Market Match provides matching funds to buy even more fruits and vegetables.

Market Match is a program of the Ecology Center and is funded by the California Department of Food and Agriculture through the California Nutrition Incentive Program and by the USDA through the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program, as well as other funders.

The vision of the market is to cultivate a strong sense of community that will bring positive change and uplift the Prescott West Oakland neighborhood.
